A book of poetry
Kenya Coast
Black child running on the white beach sand;
Quick and light his shining legs,
Shrill his lilting call.
White noon sun falls on palm and thorn,
Hump backed cattle in protective shade,
Warm sea comes sliding in.
Shrill electric cicadas
Buzzing high to noon.
The sail bellies out in the sultry heat,
Mangrove swamp, fluorescent green,
Silhouette of fishermen,
Sudden, still black shape.
